so...i finally finished this:

(my skin looks BAD in the pic...but only because it's taken in filtered natural light from a cellphone)
it took me the better part of a week to knit a beanie...i know
but the yarn was a PAIN IN THE ASS!!! it was multi stranded yarn that just DID NOT want to stay together!
anyways, here's another pic...and of course, the model, both times, is yours truly

(yes that's more knitting in the background)

You make it sound so easy.............reading your comments give me more incentive and confidence to knit on my own without the benefit of a pattern!

no pattern really. i made it
no pattern really. i made it myself. i normally don't do swatches, i just look @ the yarn & the needles i'm using and start casting on. but for most, i'd recommend you make a swatch using both the yarn and the needles you'll be using for your beanie. if you have 10 stitches per 4 inches, and your head is 20 inches in circumference, then you need to cast on 50 stitches (for example).
i personally do some type of ribbing (in this one, it's a 2x2 rib....i would have opted for 1x1 now that it's finished).

decreasing: you have to make sure you KNOW how many stitches you have. figure out what it's divisible by...i like numbers divisible by 10...but here's a general idea. you change the numbers depending on how many stitches you got on the needles:
(this is for a multiple of 10...i had 90 stitches, so there's 9 repeats)
*k8 k2tog*

*k7 k2tog*

*k6 k2tog*

*k1 k2tog*

*k2tog*
break yarn, draw through remaining loops, thead yarn through hole, pull together inside hat (so as to NOT create a point that sticks off your head)
weave in any ends.
so if you find you need to start decreasing w/ like 64 stitches, then you'll *k6 k2tog* knit next round, *k5 k2tog* etc. you should know when to switch to DPNs and finish....just follow the directions above.
for 81 stitches it's 9...you'll repeat the decrease 9 times.... *k7 k2tog* to end, knit next row, k6 k2tog, etc.
any help, post your pix in response and what you did and if i can help, help is yours!
happy knitting and knit on!
this creates a subtle spiral..sometimes not too subtle....unless you k 2 rounds in between your decrease rounds.
i was so busy concentrating
