My So Called Scarf knit-along

It's official! Let's all knit a scarf together!

Below is the modified My So Called Scarf pattern (watch video)

I like the modified first row proposed by Ingrid, also demonstrated in the video, but feel free to use the original pattern linked above.

Don't be afraid to get creative and try a different yarn or gauge!

Materials:
•2 Skeins of Manos del Uruguay
•US 11 Needles
•Darning Needle

Glossary:
•psso-pass slipped stitch over
•P2tog-purl 2 together

Instructions:

•CO 30 stitches

•Row 1: K1 *sl1, K1, yo, psso two stitches on right needle* K1.

•Row 2: *P2tog, do not slip stitches off the needle, purl the first stitch again, slip both stitches off needle*

•Repeat rows 1 and 2 until you run out of yarn.
•BO.
•Weave in all ends.

Yesterday I bought 5 skeins in 2 different colours of the Manos yarn in Amsterdam and I love the colours. Will start soon but first I have to finish my cobblestone pullover and a pair of gloves (and 1 sock). How long will the scarf be when you use 2 skeins

Joining In...

Yep, I decided to try this out. It could no longer resist. I am not using any "fancy" yarn though. I have some Red Heart worsted medium in the color "Zebra" that I am using. So far I like the look. I also casted on 42 stitches so I could have a wider scarf and do a stockinette stitch on the first and last stitch.

Welcome and good luck with the scarf! For images: the only way I was able to get it to work was to load the image to a different photo sharing site (I used flickr which seems to be what most people on here use) and then I referenced the photo on flickr in my post using the tag.

Hello! I just joined the

Hello! I just joined the group. Just so happens that I have started making this scarf for a friend. I'm using Paton's SWS (Soy Wool Stripes) yarn which is V. V. soft on size 11 circs. I added an extra 8 sts. to make the width a little wider and I have a feeling that two skeins is going to be enough for the scarf. I had bought four, so I'm hoping. I also bought four skeins and used about two and a half for mine. The fourth and remaining third were used to make a quick complimentary hat to go with the scarf.

Ok...I'm of course SERIOUSLY

Ok...I'm of course SERIOUSLY late w/ the KAL, but here's my question: I'm trying to do knit this pattern, but i'm noticing that my work is getting LOOSER and LOOSER...therefore, the scarf is getting wider and wider.
what can I do? aside from going down a needle size.
here's the issue: the knit side is really loose, but the purl side is really tight (the yarn overs are what's tight)

ALSO...as you're knitting it....is it supposed to slant a little? If i hold my needle straight, the bottom bit of the scarf i have so far is slanted more towards the right than the live stithes....?

A number of people have had

A number of people have had problems with the slanting... there is some discussion on that issue toward the bottom/beginning of the many comments.

Personally, I liked the slant, so I didn't bother trying to get rid of it. I thought the slant added one more point of interest to a stitch pattern that already drew my eyes in.

Well dang, guys! I just joined yesterday and now I'm already hopping right on the bandwagon, LOL, albeit a little late. I just ordered the Manos Del Uruguay in "Mulled Wine" from Jimmy Bean's Yarn so I can give the scarf a try myself, which is really funny since I live in soutwestern Florida and never have a need to wear a scarf! Guess I'll just have to plan a trip up North to wear the dang thing once I get it finished. Or I may end up giving it as a holiday gift. Anyway, your enthusiasm on this site is contagious and I'm glad to be here.

Here's my stab at the

Here's my stab at the pattern. I used a Soho Bulky Tweed on 9mm needles. I found the stitch definition is more subtle with the 'tweedy' nature of the yarn. For the edges I used a chain stitch or slip stitch selvage although the left edge came out very loose. In my Vogue Knitting book it mentions 3 variations on this type selvage - German, English and French. I used the German and I'll have to try one of the other variations next time. No wonder those countries are always at war with each other!

Anyway, I had this crazy, variagated novelty stuff that's in a variety of colors and textures (mostly metalic colors), which I stranded with a plain tan colored yarn...so far, so good! Knitting up on 13s, it's going pretty quickly!

My yarn finally arrived on

My yarn finally arrived on Saturday, and I just started working on it. Reading other people's comments about uneven edges, I'm putting a small garter stitch border around the main pattern. It seems to be working well, though I'm not convinced yet there is enough contrast between the garter stitch and the main stitch pattern for it to really form a nice border.

Bias solved! I went back to

Bias solved!

I went back to the original directions (on the knit side, s 1, k 1, psso, knit into ss) and it has straightened up the knitting (see my entry below which starts "Ok, I'm maybe about a third....")

Interesting, eh? Somehow for me the modified pattern created an uneveness in my knitting. I thought about taking the whole thing out and starting over, but instead I am breathing deeply and continuing on - and looking forward to Wednesday when the glasses arrive so I can actually see what i'm doing! :-)

Just started on the second

Just started on the second skein yesterday. So far, so good except...when I go from the right side to the wrong side, that first stitch is so floppy. The only way to keep it from sticking out is when I purl 2 together for the first time on that row, I have to pull that yarn so tight that it kinda wraps the looseness around a bit. Does any of this make sense? I don't know how to explain it...

Have started now and am

Have started now and am enjoying a new stitch........have been mostly doing garter and stockinette recently on felting projects.

Decided to use a bulky yarn and size 13 needles..........the pattern shows well and is fun to work on! Thanks to all who shared comments while getting started.........these comments assured an easy start for me!

Not too bad
Was able to work about 2 hours on my so called scarf for my demo - less time setting up and helping those pesky customers.

The yarn was kinda a pain to use. I have to hold it real loose, and cant pick the purls very easily.

It seems to work best picking the knit side and reverse knitting back the other way.

but i think it looks good.

Ok, I'm maybe about a third of the way done, and I'm noticing that my scarf has a slight bias to it - with the knit side facing, the left side is definitely a bit higher than the right. I'm using Noro Silk, size 10.5 needles. Are others experiencing this?

Same problem here, about 4-5inches into it...fixed with comments by gnewgnitter below. My purls (especially the first of the two) weren't as taut. All is well over the next 3 inches.

I started mine with Noro Silk Garden, but didn't like the thick and thin gauges of the yarn so it seemed a little uneven. (and a bear to rip out!) Could it be the difference in your 1st stitches tension I know my knitting is tighter than my purling.

My mother and I (don't even start!) have come across another take on 'ingrid's' version of the S1,K1,Yo,Psso. since I haven't found it very 'Continental-friendly' yet so I'm thowing this pattern. I found it is easiest to S1, K1 then pick up the slip to start passing it over and do the Yarn over at the same time. I found it's easier than trying to hold the YO down to pass the slip stitch over it. Its still the same stitches they're just slightly out of order.
