My First Sock Is Taking Shape

MasonM's picture

I seriously didn't think I would be able to do a sock, but it's actually starting to take shape and that shape is definitely that of a sock.

I only made it with a 4 inch top because I don't have enough yarn to do taller ones. But that's ok, I prefer shorter socks anyway.

Today I make the heel flap and turned the heel. I wasn't sure if I could do the heel turn, but I just followed the instructions and sure enough I had a turned heel! Woohoo!

I'm now working on shaping the gusset. I did make one mistake. I knitted one round as instructed, and then did a decrease round. I was supposed to do another knitted round before doing another decrease round, but I forgot and did another decrease round instead. Oops. I'm hoping it won't mess it up too badly.

An amazing piece of magic, yes, the turning of a heel. If you do exactly as the instructions say, it will work. You need more faith! And never underestimate your skills!

Working with dp is no different than any other needles. You can only work one stitch at a time with only two points. Doesn't matter if they are on one end, on both, or are attached with a cable. I think EZ starts out a beginner with circs and they do a hat! May as well, since it's all the same, really.

Way to go on the sock! Now there won't be anything stopping your from your next project, no matter what it is. I can't wait.

Thanks. yeah it is pretty

Thanks. yeah it is pretty cool. I only have 3 more inches to go before I can start the toe. I'm really looking forward to seeing (and wearing) the finished product. I can hardly wait to start it's mate.

My Knit Picks Options should be delivered tomorrow. My next socks will be done on one of those assuming I can figure out the magic loop thing.

Way to go Mason! I

Way to go Mason! I "cheated" on my first couple of socks (Christmas stockings, actually) and didn't do a true turned heel - I used a short row heel which is way way easier - but the pair I've got going now will have true flap and turned heels.

Thanks. I'm not advanced

Thanks. I'm not advanced enough to cheat LOL

*grin* but you go ahead and *do* It took me years to attempt a sock, and even then I had the yarn and needles for the project for almost 12 months before I cast on. Socks petrified me.

I've always been one of those "dive in head first" types. The more challenging the better to keep my interest.

I'm waiting for my Knit Picks Option to arrive so I can try my hand at knitting with circs. Looks like fun.

It has been great watching

It has been great watching your progress! Only your second project and you are already on double points...way to go. I can't wait to see the results.

Thanks. I can't wait to see

Thanks. I can't wait to see the results too. To me it still seems like magic. Some sticks, some string, and somehow it turns into a scarf, or a sock, or a sweater, or something else usable.

Magic.

Doesn't turning a heel make

Doesn't turning a heel make you feel smart?!?!? It really is the best part of making socks and it feels that good every time.

I wouldn't sweat that decrease round you did too soon. Throw in an extra knitted round before doing the next decrease. If you've already moved on, then don't sweat it at all, just make sure not to keep doing it. A mistake like that you can get away with once, it when you keep repeating the mistake that it bites ya.

Thanks. I moved on making

Thanks. I moved on making sure to not do it again. I've completed the gusset decreases and am working towards the toes. As I have pretty big feet (US size 13)that's gonna take a while LOL

Turning the heel was definitely cool. Like magic.
