WIP's and Chain Stitches
I have another work in progress (WIP, to the acolytes among you) on the needles...and I have reached a decision point in my life.
Shall I remain a faithful knitter (tips that touch crochet shall never touch mine)? Or combine knitting and crochet (gasp!) perhaps committing apostacy...I avoid wrath whenever possible.
I must admit I like combining the best of both worlds. What would EZ do? What do you believe? Which side of this fair aisle are you on?

...I don't crochet at all...just fake it...but I was able to do free form knitting...

I always called myself ambi-textilous. It feels so much better now that I know what’s wrong with me! It has a name!
I first learned to cast on
I first learned to cast on using a crochet hook and was taught by the same dude that crocheting was a way you can tighten up cast-on edge that ends up a bit loose. I never learned to crochet, however, but I keep a hook handy for emergencies. I say go for it. Hook 'em horns.

Isn't there a casting on
Isn't there a casting on where you combine knitting with using a crochet hook? I originally started with crochet my maternal grm taught me the basics. Mom preferred it over knitting and did lots of fillet crochet work with those tiny hooks she use to warn me of running them into my hand and getting them caught, just like a fish hook.
Knitting and crochet differ
Knitting and crochet differ only in semantics to some people. In both Russian and Hebrew, the verb for knitting doesn't distinguish between the two (you have to specify what your instrument is if you want to make a distinction), and I wonder whether those people around the Mediterrean who purl with notched needles really think there's a difference.

Both can produce wonderful pictures, but combined even more possibilities open up. Do not limit yourself.
The only "rule" I would follow: Enhancement, if it takes away frrom the goal, leave it out.

Don't think of combining
Don't think of combining knitting and crochet as apostasy. Consider it a new direction of one's doctrine. A doctrine that is not a fertile ground for evolution is simple theology. Adding new direction to one's doctrine could be considered divine! Even the Catholic archbishops are hoping that the new pope will give the religion a new, more contemporary focus. With doctrine that is 2012 years old, it's time to add a new stitch or two to its fabric. So, I say unto you, knit one, chain one, purl one, slip stitch, YO, insert DPNs, give them a good hook, and voila, you'll be "spinning a new yarn" and have some good stories to tell besides.

I will keep an open mind on your recommendation and check out the book. The reader reviews were a bit...vitrolic. But there is always a kernal of truth...I will find it.

Use as many techniques and tricks as you can !! The crochet prejudice that was pressed onto EZ at an early age is the ONLY flaw in her stellar life and career. Think Diana Vreeland....EVERYTHING is not enough!!!
