Yeah, We Call Them Pirates pattern. Not real Faire Isle, but definitely stranded knitting. As you can see from the inside shot, I used the woven stitch, so there are no floats. Makes a thick, dense fabric with nary a "Thar she blows!" through to the scalp. Used Noro silk and wool in the single colors, black and white. Light as a feather, warmer than...well, you get the idea.

No Joe, I found it on Ravelry in my search for any hat that wasn't a watch cap, or a watch cap that had unusual construction, design or jus' pleased me. This one had it all...but as usual, I tinkered heavily with the original so I suppose even its creator would have a tough time telling it from the tadpole.

LOL...I'm not surprised that you tinkered with the original pattern as I recall several postings where you mention that about your knitting. That's part of the fun of this craft/art - being willing to see where you can take it. After all, you can always rip it out if it doesn't work.

If only that were true...I

If only that were true...I have a black mohair shirt on the needles right now, glaring at me, defying me to render it assunder. I forgot the unctuousness mohair possesses...and the Shibui yarn I am using has a silk core stronger than steel. This combo should carry a warning lable or at minimum a haz mat sheet.

I think I am going back to spinning tow linen for a rest...LOL Don't worry, I am kidding.

Nice work Mark, I prefer light and warm garments. I hadn't heard of the woven stitch so looked it up on You Tube, an easy and effective stitch.

I learned it several years

I learned it several years ago from the Philosopher's Wool owners and designers...great technique that also works to secure yarn ends and solve other problems that lurk with color knitting. Mary Thomas has a whole section of her techniques book devoted to doing it knit, purl, forwards and even backwards. Very handy skill to have, IMHO.

Made one for a bud who works for El Al on flight security...he wears his "at work." Can't see the attraction, but your observation makes sense...lol.
