Good evening to all Men Who Knit. Well, it's evening over here right now. I just joined and looking forward to participating in this group.
A little about me...
I started crochet and knitting in 2010 - just before my last deployment to Afghanistan with the Army. My wife started teaching our boys how to crochet, so I decided to join in on the family activity. I learned how to crochet, but then realized that I really liked the way knitting looked over the crochet, so I purchased numerous videos and learned how to knit.
I did some knitting during that deployment, and subsequently retired from the Army on Jan. 1st, 2012, and am now back in Afghanistan as a defense contractor. We retired out of Fort Bragg, NC and now live in Fayetteville, NC.
I have been doing many hours of knitting while over here, and have completed 3 hats, 2 scarves and a drawstring bag in just the past two months, and am currently knitting a Color Affection (CA) shawl for my wife, and my next project will be the Far Away, So Close (FASC) shawl by Carina Spencer.
Attached is one of the scarves that I made for my brother, the WIP of the CA, and what my FASC will look like when done. I purchased the same exact colors dyed by the same exact dyer (Julie at selahshop.com).
Regards,
Terin

Welcome Terin! Your work is amazing. I can't wait to see the FASC shawl when you finish it. I really love that cable scarf.
Hey what I really enjoyed
Hey what I really enjoyed hearing is that you decided to join in with the family ! That is so great with so many benefits latter for your family. I wish I had that in mine. My father basically said and i quote "One thing I hate is to see a man knit" So I ended up knitting and crocheting in my bedroom. (closeted I guess )
I love the cable scarf too!
Welcome to a great supportive
Welcome to a great supportive group. Aren't videos and U-tube great resources? Especially for visual learners they can't be beat. Please, please, stay safe. Although it might be fun to hunt for yarn and find out if hand knitting is popular in Afghanistan, I'm relieved to learn you don't go venturing out of the FOB (whatever that is). Your wife and boys need you to come without harm. The scarf you finished and the shawl are impressive. Keep sharing your work with us. Bill
Thanks Bill. FOB = Forward
Thanks Bill. FOB = Forward Operating Base. Will keep it as safe as possible. And will keep sharing. Terin
Welcome Terin. Do you buy
Welcome Terin. Do you buy yarn in Afghanistan? I'm also wondering if you've ever seen any women in Afghanistan knitting. I'd be curious to know the method they use. I look forward to your participation. This is a very unusual group of men. I feel quite, quite lucky to be part of it. I wish you all the best here, Terin. Tom
Thanks Tom. I order all my
Thanks Tom. I order all my yarn online, some from Ravelry members, and have bought a LOT of Mosaic Moon yarn via coops and buying clubs (most of which is being shipped home). I don't go outside the FOB (thankfully), so there really isn't a means for me to buy yarn here. I look forward to getting to know everyone and participating in the group.

Terin

Thanks everyone for the
Thanks everyone for the welcome. I look forward to getting to know other men that knit and sharing what (for me) has become an addiction.
Welcome. The people on here
Welcome. The people on here are great. I've often asked them advice and they've never failed to help. I enjoy sharing my knitting and seeing other people's work. Lookng at your work it is obvious you are good, and the tension in the knitting looks so even. Great work. Simon
Thanks Simon. I consider
Thanks Simon. I consider myself more of an intermediate knitter. I'm more of a product of too many hours of knitting videos. I have purchased pretty much every video from Interweave, a bunch of videos from yarn stores, and lots of Youtube. That coupled with the fact I knit about 6 hours a day here in Afghanistan has helped. :-)
Welcome and I hope you enjoy
Welcome and I hope you enjoy yourself very much as you interact with us.

If you're referring to the
If you're referring to the Far Away, So Close shawl, I haven't cast on yet. The pictures just show the colors I'll be knitting. My FASC should pretty much be identical to the one in the picture.
If you're referring to the WIP of the Color Affection shawl, thank you very much. :-)
Hi and welcome, Terin! It's
Hi and welcome, Terin! It's nice to hear how you started and to see some of your projects. The colors for the Affection Shawl are especially nice! You'll find that this is a warm, welcoming and humorous group. Not to mention very knowledgeable! Make yourself at home and have fun!
