Christmas Balls

Here are two of the Christmas Balls I made.



One was done this year (red), one last year (green). They're not quite as perfect as I'd like (being pretty detail oriented!), but they are a lot of fun to make and are great practice at stranded knitting.

I'm learning more as I go and one can easily be done in a day. The pattern came from 55 Christmas Balls To Knit by Arne & Carlos. If two-color knitting isn't your cup of tea, the designs can be added using duplicate stitch, or they can be done in solid colors or with decorative/patterned yarns as well. Yes, I have been using the patterns in their book. There are so many nice deigns to choose from. I have made four in all so far...the two posted here as well as a bird and a moose design.

I used size 3 US needles. I'm not sure about the yarn though. It was some unmarked stuff I had floating around. I would just suggest using needles that are 2-3 sizes smaller than recommended for that yarn so it creates a tighter material. This will ensure that the fiberfill doesn't show through when it is stuffed.

Hard to believe they came out

Hard to believe they came out so beautifully spherical with fiberfill. I would have guessed styrofoam. Excellent work!

A friend of mine mentioned

A friend of mine mentioned using nylon stockings and anklets as an inner liner for the stuffing on knitted items. Helps keep the filling under control. Of course, for guys, the problem is having a steady supply of the nylons.

ETA: I bet the above comment gets jumped on with all kinds of replies, knowing this crowd. Oh well, helps liven things up.

I have a hard time deciding

I have a hard time deciding what to buy at the supermarket, so my strategy is to follow the first shopper I see and buy whatever they are buying. In general it works out pretty well- however I have accumulated a lifetime supply of nylons and tampons.

Very nice. I've knit tiny

Very nice. I've knit tiny socks for tree ornaments, some with tiny gift wrapped boxes stuffed in them, and crochetted angels, but never knit anything like this.
