Cardigan Border Suggestions

I am making a cardigan for my wife and it's a standard raglan design. The pattern says I should just pick up the stitches along the right and left front panels and do a garter stitch for about 6 - 10 rows or so...about an inch to an 1.5 inches. I was wondering if there are any slick ways of knitting a border with a bit more interest and just join the border to the panel as I knit it?

I was thinking of perhaps using a thinner yarn of the same color and smaller needles and doing a single or double cable flanked with either a seed stitch or the garter stitch. I know I could make a border separate from the garment then join it after the fact, but I would like to join it as I knit.

Any suggestions?

I like garter stitch done

I like garter stitch done longways....but I've also been experimenting with seed stitch which is my favourite. If you're working it at th same time as the body, it diesn't pucker or flare. To get a really professional look, use a purl stitch to separate the body from the border and then do the seed stitch. I also find that the one row button hole works best on seed stitch (where you wrap and turn and cast on)

Not sure how fancy you want....I find that some really nice buttons do the trick.

Hi Steve,
I was thinking of doing a 10-stitch (3CF,3CB) with 4 garter stitches in the background. I know I could just knit a long border and then attached it after the fact, but I was wondering if there was a way I could start at the top of the garment, do the 10-stitch pattern, turn, purl, and work down the front, attaching it as I go so I won't have to do a seam later.

You might do seed stitch or

You might do seed stitch or double seed stitch instead of garter. It makes a nice stable border.
