Stumped. Need Help...

I'm making a 2x2 ribbed hat. I'm about 2 inches away from starting my decreases. But I don't want swirly, right-leaning decreases. I want the ribs to travel straight up. Please help. Any suggestions?

Mike, Lars et al. Thank you for all your help. I tried the paired decreases of ssk and k2tog on both sides of a rib. Whaddaya know? It works! I don't have a pic of the finished result but rest assured it looks lovely. It has been spending equal amounts of time off my head with me just admiring it. Not hat weather yet in San Francisco but this hat will definitely be used quite a bit this winter. Thanks Everyone! - Faust

Marnie MacLean has a pattern

Marnie MacLean has a pattern for a 1x1 rib hat she calls "Pismo" that illustrates the knit 2 tog (or purl 2 tog), ssk (or ssp) in order to keep to the 1x1 rib. Check it out here: http://marniemaclean.com/patterns/Pismo/index.html.

Once again, (sigh . . .)

Once again, (sigh . . .) Lars is all over this.

One can keep bias travesties from happening by foiling the bias angle of a ssk or a k2tog, by adding - in that same row - the opposite decrease. As Lars said, if you have a k2tog as your prime decrease, then immediately if not sooner, execute a ssk to equalize the k2tog bias. Of course, you'll want to kfb to cancel out that 2nd decrease somewhere but, you *knew* that!

NOW: what I want to know is when we're all going to get together to gang-slap Lars for being a smart-ass?????? Oh, sure! He'll want us to abuse him verbally during the trial, but we won't. Just 'cause it'll bug him . . . . . Mwaaaaaaaa ha ha ha ha haaaaaaaaaa . . . . . . .

just played around with

just played around with this, diagraming it out etc - and I think, thinks I; that if I were doing it I would probably select equispaced ribs around the hat, and do single decreases on either side of the two stitch rib, so that the center rib "swallows" the rib on either side of it as you decrease.

if x=knit; - =purl ^ is a decrease

you would go from

xx--xx--xx--xx--xx
to
xx--xx^xx^xx--xx
to
xx--x^xx^x--xx
to xx--^xx^--xx

you can do your decrease

you can do your decrease with the stitch above the decrease in the previous round and the stitch AFTER it, that should cancel out the right leaning aspect.

oh heck - Lars probably has the best idea.
