Tension
18 sts and 35 rows to 10cm over linen stitch on 5mm needles

Row 1: *K1, yfwd, sl.1 purlwise, ybk; repeat from * to last stitch, k1
Row 2: P1, *p1,ybk, sl.1 purlwise, yfwd: repeat from * to last 2 sts, p2

This is my first attempt to make up my own knitting instructions using a fabric battle dress jacket which fits me well as a pattern. I have also referred to Erika Knight - Denim Jacket in Rowan's Designer Collection Summer and Winter Knitting by Stephen Sheard (1987)

Waistband
Using 5mm circular 120cm cast on 197 sts. I used cable method to give a hardwearing edge. At the lefthand edge when piece is 1.5cm, work 3 sts and cast off next 5 sts for button hole. As I am using large 2cm diameter buttons, I bring the yarn to the front, slip a stitch from the left hand needle and take the yarn back. Slip the next stitch and with the left hand needle, lift the first slipped stitch over the second. Continue in this way, leaving the yarn at the back until 5 sts have been cast off. Slip the last stitch back to the left hand needle. Turn the work and with the yarn at back, cast on with cable method one more stitch than stitiches cast off, i.e. 6, but bring the yarn forward through the needles before placing the last cast on stitch on to the left hand needle. Turn the work and slip the first stitch onto right hand needle passing the extra cast on stitch over it.
When work is 5cm, at the lefthand edge work the second button hole as described above. Continue until waistband is 7cm from start and cast off loosely on a knit row ending with 1 stitch on righthand needle.

Front Left
Body of the jacket is worked in panels with edges showing as a feature (attachment 1). I picked up 54 stitches plus the stitch already on needle making 55 stitchs to keep the pattern correct. Pick up the stitches from behind so that the binding-off is displayed. Increase 1 stitch in row 5 (this should be a knit row) at the seam edge (Note that the facing edge is kept straight.), and every fourth row.

Joe, I shall be recording

Joe, I shall be recording what I am doing as I go to provide a record of instructions. I shall also post a picture when the piece has progressed a bit. Thanks for the encouragement.
