Thank you peter43. It is double knitting (knit one, purl one, with two strands of wool being knitted alternately or as the pattrern dictates) It in fact is just a tight ribbing which gives the effect of two-sided knitting. Slow to knit but nice and thick when finished - cozy for the winter! Although by the time I'm finished it will, of course, be spring.
