Pattern Question

Hi everyone & happy holidays! I am trying to finish a hat as a present but am a little confused with the decrease stitch instructions. It is the Jacque Cousteau hat. Here are the directions:
"The decreases are KKS (Knit-knit-slip= knit two stitches and then slip the first of these two over the second"
Now I've done a ssk stitch before, but does this one mean that I slip the first one over the second stitch and off the needle?

So I am not happy with this

So I am not happy with this decrease. I am unsure as to whether I knit when I am decreasing at a purl stitch or if I purl the purl stitches...argh! I am considering frogging back to the first decrease and do a simple ssk decrease. Any insights, guys?

The way I see it - if the first row is any indication - you work until you get to the first of the final three knit stitches, then knit the next two, on which you do the decrease.

So 26 stitches comes out (R-L):
"O" = marker

pp O kk | k pp kkk pp kkk pp kkk pp kkk pp kkk
^
kks
these

The result is this ("K" being the one stitch you made out of two by slipping):
pp O Kk pp kkk pp kkk pp kkk pp kkk pp kkk

Next you work to within 2 stitches of marker ("|")

pp O Kk | pp kkk pp kkk pp kkk pp kkk pp kkk

You've got two knit stitches in front of you. You knit them and then you have the KKS, giving you:
pp O K pp kkk pp kkk pp kkk pp kkk pp kkk

The problem (if I'm reading you correctly) is in rows like the one you come up to now:
pp O K p | p kkk pp kkk pp kkk pp kkk pp kkk

Judging from the look of the hat, you'd come to two stitches before the marker (the "|") above, then do the purl and the knit, an slip the purl stitch over the knit stitch, then do your two purls. That's what gives you the gradua tapering fo the knit stitches and then the consistent purl "groove" separating the ribbing pattern into 4.

But now I have to try it myself just to be sure. :)

In all my knitting experience, I've not come across that one before. Most interesting...I'll have to keep it in mind for future projects. Thanks for sharing.

Does this means to knit two stitches, slip the next stitch and then pass the first knit stitch over the second knit stitch and the slip stitch?

Hi Mark, The way I read that

Hi Mark,
The way I read that line was to start each new row with the knit stitches, not the pearl stitches. I think it was redundant because if you cast on the correct amount, you start with the knit stitches anyway.

Hi Paul,
I did as Bill suggested and found it works well. I cast on 10 stitches as a test and then at one of the middle stitches I did the KKS. I knit one stitch, then knit a second one, then I slipped the first stitch back over the second and off the needle, much the same as you would do a simple binding off at the end of a scarf. After I did this, I had 9 stitches left, which is what your pattern is calling for, a single decrease.

Hope this is correct and that it helps.

I found the pattern on Ravelry.com and really like it. Paul, as I was reading it, I found I now have a question for you. What is the last letter or number in the word "knitl" in the sentence "...starting the rows with knitl stitches."

I think the "knitl" is just a typo.

It's a nice hat though I think I'd want to use wool instead of cotton.
