That's AMAZING! I have a dog, Ariel, who could be Caleb's cousin except for her coloring. She's charcoal, tan and white. I was actually saving all of her hair from brushings as she, too, has an imensely soft undercoat that seems to multiply by the minute. So many of my friends made fun of me for wanting to spin her hair and were ready to commit me for delving too far into the world of knitting (they being non-knitters). I'm so glad there is a fellow yarn/dog psycho out there. Congrats on the hat. It, as well as Caleb, is beautiful!!! I will proudly start saving Ariel's fur again now that I have inspiration.
I am currently spinning enough samoyed to make a 9'x9' afghan. To wash I use the same shampoo that I use. I find that Dr. Bronners can leave a bit of residue that even white vinegar doesn't seem to take off. But, if you're happy with it...more power to you. The hat is GORGEOUS, and I love the photo with Caleb. Is the hat VERY warm?
This is awesome! I've been saving my Aussie's brushings for a while now and the wheel is on the way, but I haven't separated the undercoat... hmmmmmm. Gorgeous hat and Caleb is a handsome boy! So glad you shared!
Thanks for all the comments. It is all Caleb fur. He's got a great undercoat. The hat feels a lot like alpaca. She didn't seperate the colors. I have just been saving it from the floor and when I bruch him. She spun it and got 2 skiens. I double up the yarn when I knit it. I used a 10 1/2 circular and cast on 64 stitches. I still have enough for another hat. I plan to wear it on days that it won't get wet. Don't want to smell like a wet dog. BTW, I'll use Dr. Bonners Lavender Soap to wash it. I've used it on wool and it works great. I buy it at the Health Food Store. Thanks agian for your comments!
Tell us more! Is it all dog or did she blend it?
A coworker gave me some dog fur after a trip to the groomers. I still need to clean out the guard hairs and spin it, but I need to practice my spinning a bit more.
