Zane Grey socks

scottly's picture

I just grabed a couple skeins of Wildfoote yarn out of my stash to start a pair of socks and noticed that the color was called Zane Grey. So now I have to make a pair fit for a cowboy. My mind is blanking except I'm pretty sure lace isn't the ticket. Maybe the classic red cuffs, heels and toes in a really simple ribbed leg. Hmm, cowboy socks. Any thoughts?

Thanks guys, I've got a plan

Thanks guys, I've got a plan now. I think I'll do a 2 - 3" red cuff in k1, p1 rib and then an extra long leg in k2 p2 rib down to the gusset then a stockenette foot with the heel flap, heel and toe in red. I almost always continue the leg ribbing through the top of the food but I think a full stockentte foot would be more authentic. Any other suggestions are welcome.

I like the ribbed top of foot

I like the ribbed top of foot because it's more elastic...

OK, ribbing all the way to

OK, ribbing all the way to the toe. It's a lot less boring to knit that way.

If it is just plain

If it is just plain stockinette, I usually plug in some music or read a book.

Definitely longer on the calf

Definitely longer on the calf and - possibly - tapered to cover manly calves. Plus, there's the practical side - boot tops sometimes rub on the calf and cause sore spots.

I wear boots every day. My boot socks are wool, ribbed legs and top...and thicker than normal socks. When I knit them I often use multiple strands of yarn...

Well, they'd have to be boot

Well, they'd have to be boot tall, for one thing, not these ankle length things favored by today's hip running crowd. Classic red ribbed cuffs would be good, and plain stockinette, or ribbed leg, definitely. I've worn cowboy boots and the key thing in socks is to be calf length and don't fall down or bunch up in the toes.
