Any ideas

I want to knit something for a very dear friend in LA for her birthday in September. My other half helpfully pointed out that the chunky item on the needles is hardly going to be needed in LA and would be more suited to the north of Scotland. Any ideas for a smallish item that's for the glamourous and sun-kissed of L.A???

A very airy lacy shawl would work in LA---evenings can have a bit of an edge.
