Hi everyone just a quick question does anyone have any suggestions for different squres for the great american aran afghan I dont want to include some of the squares in the one i am working on i would love to have any input

Myself and another teacher

Myself and another teacher here locally were teaching this as a cable class. I was thinking it would be nice to make the few ones I like, and separate them with plain patterned squares, so you would get an afghan with a kind of aran checkerboard pattern.

Just my thoughts.

There are also free stitch libraries on Lion Brand's Website and Vogue Knitting's Stitchonary
from which you may be able to extrapolate some blocks of your own. Hope that helps!

Hey Matthew, I too am

Hey Matthew, I too am working on TGAAA. How many squares are you looking to do for your afghan? My plan is to stick with 24, and have already selected the 4 patterns out of the 30 designs that I'm NOT doing. Like Ray said, there are some nice aran patterned designs on ravelry, or if you're adventurous try designing your own!
Just out of curiosity, which patterns are you not interested in doing from TGAAA book? I'm not doing Judy Sumner (bugs don't belong on an afghan, sorry), Vicki Sever (i support what it stands for, just not a fan of the ribbon design), Janet Martin (fish in the net.....might do this as part of a fun kids afghan though), and Susan Rainey (the sweater idea seems kinda gimmicky to me)....Still gathering the nerve to try the Betty Salpekar square (I think some of those techniques should be banned!)
Let me know how yours is coming along, and as always, we would love to see pictures!

dont care for the fish and the ribbon and the dna design i would like my afghan to be bigger than the book so I really would like to add more squares 12 done so far and still have 12 balls of yarn to work with I will get pics on soon

I had a similar situation

I had a similar situation when I was making my own Aran afghan a while back. I picked up a copy of "Harmony Guides 220 Aran Stitches and Patterns Volume 5" and found designs in there that I liked and then created panels around those designs. It's more work because you'll have to swatch each panel to get a sense on how wide it is, but the end result gave me panels that I liked and could call my own. I don't have first-hand experience with this project, but if you go to ravelry and do a search on "Great American Aran Afghan" you'll find a number of projects that might help you decide.
