Need help with this project
So, I'm kinda new to the site. I signed up a while ago, but never really used it save for a few peaks here and there.
I finished up a scarf, so now I want to start up on my new project, but this one will be very difficult for me because 1) all I've done is flat projects like scarves and shawls, so I don't know anything about making a sweater, and 2) no one else has made this that I know of, so there is no pattern available.
If anyone has any advice they can throw my way, I would greatly appreciate it. I need help with patterns to create, what kind of yarn (and brand if people are particular), size needles, and anything else anyone might think of.

Looking at the pictures I would have to say that it is not just knitted but there appears to be quilting and sewing along with the knitting, it also appears to be to garments in one.

it probably is. i don't see the quilting part though. i imagine the whole vest part is knitted, plus the sleeves, and the part connecting the sleeves. the shirt part underneath, plus the neck thing, i don't think are knitted, which would have to be sewn on.

Well I think none of it is knitted is a CGA creation, but you can probably knit some parts of it. There are parts that look like they are sewn together, I can see the quilting areas, but it may not be quilted at all, the belt is fabric or even leather, but since it is a cartoonish model it is hard to tell. You can assume a lot, but assume the wrong things from a drawing. It has a lot of possibilities, To find a material that behaves well with all those cables and the gauge , that's a different story. Good luck, it seems like a good challenge for you!

judging from the pics attached, it looks like the vest part is knitted, same with the back, and the sleeves. the green breast part isn't knitted, neither is the neck wrap thing. eh, who knows.

this is from final fantasy 13. the character who's wearing this sweater/vest thing (i still have no idea what it is) has a small bit role that affects one of the main characters. she's actually known for having the worst line in the game ("mom's are tough", right before she's killed by an explosion).

i've been on ravelry.com looking for similar sweater/vests. i found a few patterns. i think i'll just take each of them and take what i need from each of the patterns and make my own pattern out of it.

If I were you, I would go out and purchase immediately any, and I do mean ANY, copy of any of Elizabeth Zimmerman's books. Why?
Because you will learn more in that single evening of reading than from any website, blog or ezine. More than from any online vendor. More than from even this unredoubtable website. EZ is the gold standard of simplicity, sage wisdom and cut-to-the-bone-information to get you going.
If I have a little extra money, I buy yarn, fiber books, and knitting supplies. I get food with what's left over.

yes, it is difficult. i honestly don't know where to start. i figure figuring out which kind of yarn would be a good place, but even that's a bit of a challenge.

There are hundreds of suitable yarns...cost and what is available near you is a starting point...but I'd find a pattern first...and see what yarns it suggests. It's easy enough to substitute silk for wool, once you find a pattern. I'd suggest an acrylic wool blend. Cheaper and can still be quality yarn.

That is a difficult sweater even with a pattern. I suggest you join ravelry.com (a knitting site) and search for a similar pattern you might adapt. I've seen several with the curved, ribbed hemline. None with that kind of shoulder.
If you are a clever type, you could do it...otherwise you'll need help from someone near you...doing it on line would be very difficult, hard to describe all the details by mail..
