why did i do my first big fair isle by deciding to design it myself? i am making a hoodie with a band of fair isle across the chest and upper sleeves and just couldn't find a theme i liked enough, so...
i found a photo of a leaping coyote (love trickster references) and reversed the image so they are continuous. then i made a little geometric for the negative space and added a band to separate it from the main color work.
pix to follow. i have been frogging a lot, too much to yet able to make out the pattern. yikes

Sounds fun, Steve. I, too, love Coyote and used to tell his tales to the kids when I worked at the library. Can't wait to see the pics. -- Books, knitting, cats, fountain pens...Life is Good.
Just a reminder...DO NOT use
Just a reminder...DO NOT use regular square grids or your knitting will be very distorted. Use knitter's graph paper or make some. Stitches are taller than they are wide. If you have to make graph paper, you can do it in excel; set your column width to 10.0 and your row height to 14.0, set grids on all squares and you will be set.
i did use knitting graph
i did use knitting graph paper, but in the wrong proportions. had to redo. then i transcribed into onto graph paper large enough for my old eyes. it's two sided

Not crazy at all!!! Why NOT
Not crazy at all!!!
Why NOT your first big Fair Isle be of your own design?
'tis a most awesome undertaking!
I can't wait to see it.

Steve, I feel the same way
Steve, I feel the same way about the pattern I am doing for Skacel. It feels like I am doing it backwards. The next time I design something, I am going to make sure there is no deadline and I have enough time to design, knit, write, correct, frog, tink, re-knit and the like before I decide to submit the design.
Brave man!! Can't wait to
Brave man!! Can't wait to see it. I'm sure it will be great!
