Went down to the SF Main today to get my knit together at “Knit Happens!” They have it every third Saturday of the month and it was the third Saturday of August, 2009 at Knit Happens! that I learned to knit. There were about 5 people from Monday Night Knit (my local knitting posse) who were there today instructing and one of them had me stand up and show what I was doing and told everyone it was my knitting birthday and I got a round of applause and a number of people came over to check out my work. So, am I grateful that I’ve been taught how to knit and brought along in the craft by my knitting buds on Monday Night, you may ask. The answer is, “Oh my, my, oh hell yes.” Best thing that’s happened in my so-called life in many a long year. But don’t get me started.

I’m posting a picture of my current WIP: a cotton, double knit, Fair Isle bathroom mat. It looks advanced but it’s not. It’s flat. A giant swatch. There are no increases nor decreases, no short rows, no yarn-overs, no knitting in the round, no buttonholes, no sock-heels, no mitered corners, no joining, no grafting, no cables, etc. It’s just square (rectangular really), flat knitting. A very big swatch. All one stitch: knit, purl, knit, purl, knit, purl... Utterly and completely elementary once you get past the first row (the set-up row). As I begin year two of my knitting adventure I’m determined to move beyond flat knitting to 3D: gloves, hats, cardigans and beyond...
