Both Starmore and Feitelson

Both Starmore and Feitelson have very good books on the subject. Starmore's also has fairly straightforward instructions as to how to do all the stuff necessary to make a successful first project. Lots of luck and keep us posted. -- Books, knitting, cats, fountain pens...Life is Good.

Try Don's Vest from Latvian

Try Don's Vest from Latvian knitting. It's only 2 colors and it's pretty easy. That was MY first fair isle. Plus it's a vest, so no sleeves for a beginning project. you can see it on my blog or ravelry page if you want. I'll post it on here too.

I have not attempted fair

I have not attempted fair isle yet, but have checked out Alice Starmore's book of Fair Isle knitting from our library several times. I think i remember it being very detailed with information on the technique, tips and patterns.
Try your library before you buy.
