And now for something different...

I've been back in the states for about a month and in that month just about everything in my life has changed...some good, some bad. I got promoted to department head when my former department head retired at the beginning of July. My son packed up his room and went on a road trip with his mom before he leaves for college next month. I have packed up my room to move out of a loveless relationship: my little boy is now a little man and living on his own, so I can do it, too.

But my primary purpose for posting. Sam has asked me to make him a blanket for the bed in his dorm room. I have never made a blanket and definitely haven't made one an 18yo boy (ok, young man) would like. All the patterns I have found have been too frilly or just not Sam at all. Any ideas where to look other than Ravelry?

Congratulations on your

Congratulations on your elevation and good luck with your new life!

I agree that you can’t go wrong with garter stitch when it comes to a young man’s blanket. I’m on an afghan/blanket tear and have been for a couple of years now and I keep returning to garter stitch because it’s so warm and masculine at the same time.

You might be interested in Meg Swansen’s Puzzle Pillow Blanket. It is done in diagonal garter stitch, could be knit in Sam’s school colors, and it can be folded up from a blanket into a self-containing pillow. Really neat!

The pattern is in her book “Handknitting” which is available from Schoolhouse Press (along with a how-to video as well):

How about Elizabeth

How about Elizabeth Zimmerman's great garter stitch blanket: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/knitted-garter-stitch-blanket-in-sheepsdown and jared flood's take on this pattern: http://brooklyntweed.net/blog/?p=210 .

I love, love, love Jared

I love, love, love Jared Flood's version of this EZ pattern. Outrageously beautiful. I want to make one of these. And apparently it's not that hard! It did take him 8 months to do though. So it's not what you'd call a quick knit. And as others have said, it would make an awesome rug as well. Great suggestion, John!

Have you looked at any of

Have you looked at any of the patterns by Woolly Thoughts? Not your typical blankets and some of them really look like they would be fun to knit.
