I'm in the process of doing a modular afghan. Stitches are picked up for each square, so there's no seaming involved. I then plan to put a an applied I-Cord around it instead of the standard garter stitch border. It's turning out to be a fun knit.
I tried something similar years ago but you had to sew together the individual squares. I tried, but it always came out lumpy and uneven. Maybe if I tried it again today it wouldn't.
