Calling all Presbyterian knitters and their friends!

I'd like to invite y'all to get involved in this!

The 2010 Presbyterian Church USA General Assembly will be meeting in the Twin Cities, MN this July. Some of the most enduring impressions of the San Jose assembly two years ago were the rainbow scarves knitted so lovingly by so many and then worn by so many people at the assembly to remind folks that LGBT folks are full members of the body of Christ. Each assembly we come closer to making to full ordination for LGBT Presbyterians a reality. The silent witness of these rainbow scarves does a lot to remind people of the grace and hope that exists in the church.

Herewith we invite you to knit scarves as we pray our way to GA with the challenge that we will have a scarf for every commissioner and advocate sent to the assembly (that’s about 1,500) because we trust the Holy Spirit to move every heart there to want one.

Here's a link to the project: http://www.mlp.org/fmd/files/219th%20GA%20Scarves%20Project.pdf

These are the knitting and crocheting directions:

Yarn: Red Heart Supersaver Multicolor; the color is Mexicana (0950). The yarn is online at www.coatscollection.com. If you search for DL010527P (both are zeros, hope they don't look like Os) it takes you to the type of yarn and then you can find Mexicana (color 0950). Red Heart Mexicana is also online on Joanne’s Fabrics. I have found the yarn in abundant supply at our local Michael's and Walmart stores.

Knitting Instructions: Many of you know this drill—use your wonderful imaginations! The scarves can be any size between 3 to 6 inches across and 48 to 68 inches long. I've made a few that are straight knit on a variety of needles, from size 8 to 11, casting on 10-14 stitches. Everyone is welcome to use whatever stitches, patterns, etc. you wish for these...it is a great project for trying out something new! The rainbow yarn is the common thread; our common love in Christ is flows into every stitch.

So start now: knitting, crocheting, tatting, lacemaking our way to GA, inviting others to join in and sending the scarves by June 15, 2010 to Susan Robertson 9650 Clover Circle Eden Prairie, MN 55347

Thank you, thank you thank

Thank you, thank you thank you! I'm planning on being there myself and am looking forward to the "shower of scarves". It's utterly amazing to look out over a 10,000 person worship service and see the rainbows everywhere you look!

You are welcome. I'm heartened that the vote comes closer to passing as time goes by. May this be the time when it succeeds. -- Books, knitting, cats, fountain pens...Life is Good.

I took part in this the last time. Unfortunately, the local deadline ran out before we could send them. However, I still have the scarves and a group of us are planning to send them this year. Even though I'm not Presbyterian, or even Christian, I think it is a great message to send. -- Books, knitting, cats, fountain pens...Life is Good.
