I was glad to find that

I was glad to find that Amazon has a FREE iphone app! It's easy to read, and has plenty of free or very inexpensive books (i.e. 50 novels by Anthony Trollope for $6. The only thing that it doesn't have that I could wish for is a way to search for words and phrases.

Three's a Barnes & Noble

There are TONS of free books at the Gutenburg Project:

Also, searching at bn.com often brings up freebees that are in the public domain. (Probably true at Amazon too...)

Nice job. I had not heard of the Nook. I have a Kindle and I must say that I am so happy with it when I travel. I can take along many books in a small space.

Cool Nook cover, nice and masculine but what I really want to know is how do you like reading books on the Nook? Do you find it more or less of an eye strain then on the page?

I find it a pleasant read.

I find it a pleasant read. The page transition is a bit slower than I'd prefer, but not so much that it's too annoying. My eyes take to it much better than reading books on the computer. It's a non-lit screen, so it can't be read in the dark, but it's also not at all harsh because of it.

I have found that I enjoy reading some things on the Nookster... others I still prefer on paper. For example, I'm currently (re)reading Dracula and one of my favorite Kathryn Kurtz books on the Nook and loving it. On the other hand, I'm reading Merton's New Seeds of Contemplation on paper and don't think I'd like it electronically.

On a side note (not that you asked) the software is a bit clunky. If it looses your spot you can't simply jump to... say... page 102; you have to page back to your spot (unless you set a separate bookmark). I think these kinds of things will get worked out as they release updates.

Thanks for the good info. I really do want one of these but I think I'll wait until they get the kinks worked out and possibly the price comes down. By the way can yours be upgraded?

It can do a software upgrade (actually, there was one shortly after I got it - in early January). I don't believe it's possible to do hardware upgrades (except, of course, to change the little SD card.

Oh, and the software upgrades can be done either through the 3G connection (AT&T) or via WiFi. I don't get good AT&T coverage where I live so it bombed out a couple of times, but worked well after I switched on the WiFi connection (which seems to be the default, if their both on.)
