:) I might just try this pattern and make up some socks. The last time I wore a kilt was back in the 1980s when it was popular to wear one especially in Atlanta, GA . It was a green, tartan plaid. I wore it with a white T-shirt and black boots. I had a skinny waist then as well so I looked rather hot if I must say lol

Does the garterband really

Does the garterband really work up tight enough to hold these up? I suppose I could knit an elastic thread into it. Have you tried that?

Kilt hose are traditionally

Kilt hose are traditionally worn with "flashes" or decorate cloth ribbons attached to an elastic band, worn under the turned down top of the hose. Even with a sgian dubh, they do not fall down. You can buy the flashes at any Scottish supply or piper's store, or you could easily make them with cloth and a bit of elastic. On mine, the elastic is fastened with velcro so it can be adjusted for tension.

Sorry not to answer sooner: the answer is NO, generally you're supposed to wear a garter band to hold them, and then with between the tight ribbing and the garter I've never had a pair fall down, even with strenuous scottish country dancing!

The best garters, are those that were made for boy scout uniforms, if you can still find them, lacking that, a good wide piece of elastic with 'flashes' attached would do. Flashes are bits of kilt material that are used as decorations showing out from under the turned down tops of kilt hose.

Scottish dancers use the kilt material for flashes, but solid colors are also popular among pipers and the occasional kilt wearer. With my clan tartan kilt, I wear red flashes, with my solid green Irish kilt, I wear green ones.

Thanks, Fred. I may have to get onto this...I've considered it several times over the years even though I don't wear kilts. Still, the pattern would dress up a pair of socks quite nicely. -- Books, knitting, cats, fountain pens...Life is Good.
