Back with a blast (of sock yarns)

Howdy guys,

Been away to Cologne since last Thursday. I got back on Monday evening but haven't had the time to update. My sock yarns from the Wollmeise came in the day before I left for Cologne and so I had to race around to one of my friend to make yummy yarn cakes out of these beauties:

Wollmeise sock yarn

From left to right: Drachenblut, Amazonas, Iris Sibirica

They all turned into these:

Wollmeise yarn cakes

Okay, those are just the Drachenblut and Iris Sibirica...the Amazonas had already transformed over the trip to and back from Cologne:

Wollmeise yarn cake: knitted up

Started: 08th March 2007
Finished: WIP
Yarn: Rohrspatz & Wollmeise superwash sock yarn, 100% wool; colourway "Amazonas" (Amazon)
Needle: 2.5 mm/ US #1-2 Addi Turbos (using MagicLoop method)
Pattern: Universal Toe-up Sock using Magic Cast-On

Apart from that, I also got something from Cologne:

Trekking pro natura & Colinette's Jitterbug

Zitron's "Trekking pro natura" sock yarn: 75% New Wool, 25% Bamboo; colourway # 1640

Colinette's Jitterbug sock yarn, 100% superwash Merino; colourway #67 "Copperbeach"

I actually bought just the Jitterbug. Thing was, I went to MaschenKunst, a LYS in Cologne owned by Daniela Johansonova, the maker and voice of the Secret Knitting Podcast! I got the Trekking pro natura kind of for free. "Kind of" because I am to test-knit it for her..but still: *woot!* How cool is that?

You can go and read about my adventures in Cologne and see more photos on my Blog.

Resistance is futile....

Wollmeise sock yarns

I finally caved in and ordered three hanks of sock yarn in the above colourways from the Wollmeise. In a way, this is kind of my own birthday present to myself, but I don't think I'll be getting it until Monday or so. I might be lucky that they might be in the mail right on my birthday on Saturday. *crosses fingers*

Have a great weekend!

(I'd have also posted this on Blogger, but their stupid bot thinks that my blog is a spam blog and locked it...now I have to wait until a real person at Blogger takes a look at my blog to verify that it's a real blog and unlock it for me. *shakes fists at Blogger*)

More retail therapy...

Like I said in the last post, I had acquired two more skeins:

Regia 4-Ply Sierra Colour

Regia 4-Ply Sierra Colour:
Left: #5538 "Jeans"
Right: #5547 "Ethno"

I sent the private message back already, but I would like to also state here (without name, of course, since he didn't use the comment): Thank you so much to you for having got me a Pro Account on Flickr to cheer me up over the break-up from my bf. I was at first very perplexed...but this was really the first time that someone actually just made a present for me, just like that, without having known me through my blog or having had some kind of contact with me before. So, thank you soooo much! That really cheered me up!

Retail therapy....

Sockyarns

(Click on the picture to go to my Flickr for the description of each skein)

My bf cheated on me on Shrove Tuesday and broke up with me over the phone on Ash Wednesday. I could see it coming already, so I'd been fortifying myself since the beginning of the week with Retail Therapy on an array of sock yarns (I'm on a StAL 07 yarn diet, with the exception to sock yarns, since they don't count as stash....but we all know that, don't we? *LOL*).

There are actually two more skeins that I acquired on Friday, but I'll post that later on.

The very first skein had already been transformed into this:

Toe-up socks on Magic loop

Started: 19th February 2007
Finished: WIP
Yarn: Regia Nodic Colour 4-ply sock yarn, colour #5510 "Trondheim"
Needle: 2.5 mm/ US #1/#2 Addi Turbos
Pattern: Universal Toe-up Sock using Magic Cast-On

The picture's a bit older now, because I've finished that one sock already (*mental note: bind off toe-up socks loosely!!*) and am almost half way through the foot of the second one.

Anyway, hope y'all are having a great weekend!

Walking the JayWalkers' path....

JayWalkers #2

Started: 22nd December 2006
Finished: 14th February 2007
Yarn: Regia Canadian Colour 4-ply sock yarn, colour #4733 "Ottawa"
Needle: 2.5 mm/ US #1/#2 Inox dpns
Pattern: JayWalker by Grumperina on MagKnits

At last I finished my second pair of JayWalkers. Although it seems that my gauge had tightened when I came to the second one (the one below - notice the toe, there's no pink stripe going through the brown), so it turned out somewhat smaller than the first....although I have to say that the stripings match up almost perfectly on both socks.

I've washed them already but won't be wearing them just yet...maybe on this Sunday to SnB.

JayWalkers #3

Started: 1st February 2007
Finished: WIP
Yarn: Lana Grossa's Meilenweit Magico, colour #2528
Needle: 2 mm/ US #1 Addi Turbos circs
Pattern: JayWalker by Grumperina on MagKnits

I've also started my first Project Spectrum.

This is the first time I'm doing a sock on MagicLoop and I really like the technique. I also like DPNs....however I'm not very fond of the 2 circs technique....so it seems that I would stick to using either DPNs or MagicLoop for now on and reserving 2 circs for when I don't have spare needles. (I ordered the Addi Turbo extra for doing MagicLoop)

I have to admit though that I've started this before February, but ended having to frog the whole thing out and start again. I started off using the 2.5 mm Addis (my usual size for socks), brushing aside what I've heard about the gauge being looser with Addi Turbos than with normal knitting needles....I got about 3/4 of the leg in the picture done and asked an opinion of my friend, who rightly pointed out that it seemed too loose. So I ended up frogging the whole thing and restarting with 2 mm Addis instead.

And, yes, it's another JayWalker. I know, I'm so pathetic. But really, I can't find any other patterns that I like out there....most of the challenging sock patterns seem to gear towards women, i.e. lacey...and I don't think that I want any holes in my socks, thank you very much. If it's something for men, it's kinda dull with chunky cables. It's also a dilemma that I don't want to just knit a pair of simple stockinette socks because it's just going to bore me to death....but maybe it might be a good mindless knitting. I might attempt it. But for now, it's JayWalker all the way. :-p

Anyway, hope you guys have a good week...and also a great weekend coming up. Take care!

FO: Shedir

Shedir

Shedir

Started: 26th January 2007
Finished: 03rd February 2007
Yarn: Wolle Rödel Soft Merino, 100% superwash merino, colour #359
Needle: Two 4.5 mm Addi Turbo circs (using 2 circs method)
Pattern: Shedir from Knitty's Breast-Cancer Awareness Mini-Issue
Modification: Since I'm using bigger yarn and needles than called for, I did only 3 repeats of the cable pattern before decreasing

Yes, I finished off Shedir on Saturday night...and I'd been wearing it since. I can't exactly say that the pattern is fun to knit. It was quite a fair bit of work to knit all these cables...thank goodness I know how to cable without a cable needle, otherwise I'd have gone bonkers dealing with the extra needle (although I used 2 circs instead of dpns to knit this).

Shedir

One of the nicest features that I find on Shedir is the crown decrease. It makes quite a nice pattern.

I might knit another Shedir some time in the future, but I think I'll go for a smaller gauge and better yarn. As for now, I'm satisfied with this one. :-)

And FYI, I had the yarn in my stash already and I'm not yet cheating on the Knit from your Stash 2007!

Test hanks from Rohrspatz & Wollmeise

Got bored yesterday, so I took out the mini test hanks to play with. :-p

The first of the two....

I don't know why I didn't post the first My So-Called Scarf that I'd made prior to the one that I posted here....but now that I've thought about it, I think it's a good idea to share it here, too. So, here goes:

My So Called Scarf

Started: 23rd November 2006
Finished: 14th December 2006
Yarn: Rohrspatz & Wollmeise Worsted Merino-Lambwool in the colourway "Koralle im Meer" ("Corals in the sea")
Needles: 6 mm/US #10 Inox circs
Pattern: My So Called Scarf from Sheep in the City
Modifications: Instead of a 30-stitch pattern, I reduced it to 28 stitches and add the chain edge (4 stitches in total, so that adds up to 32 stitchs), because I have only one hank of the wool and the scarf's going to be short anyway.

Another FO....

My So-Called Scarf #2

Started: 23rd December 2006
Finished: 20th January 2007
Yarn: Rohrspatz & Wollmeise Worsted Merino-Lambwool in the colourway "Rhabarber" ("Rhubarb")

Yup, that's the second My So-Called Scarf I'd made. I'm not so comfortable wearing it though...the colours aren't really me. Although I still have to admit that I love looking at the thing....and that I can't imagine just parting with it. Alhough if I don't wear it, I think I know to whom I could give it. ;-) (More to read --> Click on "Read More" below)
