I just received an order from Knitpicks containing 4 balls of super-soft Suri Dream yarn. It's 74% Suri Alpaca, 22% wool, and 4% nylon and I love it!

It's so soft and fuzzy and the colors I chose are great. The best part, though, is the price – 143 yards for $5 and they have a non-hand-dyed version for only $4 a ball.

My best friend, Frank Schaffarczyk, is participating in the AIDS Lifecycle fundraiser in which he'll be riding his bicycle 585 miles from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

Frank is also the other half of the dynamic duo which makes all the behind-the-scenes stuff of Men Who Knit happen. He helps me make lots of things happen. My grandmother refers to him as her step-grandson and she generally doesn't like people.

He's always doing something to help someone out and I thought I'd put his rider page out there as a way to show my support for him and the cause he's giving his energy to.

I decided to teach myself how to knit continental-style today. I've got the knits down, but I think I'm twisting my purl stitches. Maybe I'm wrapping the yarn the wrong way... I'm using the videos at KnittingHelp.com to guide me along.

I've been going through my stitch dictionary to find something with an interested texture. I have been eyeing the staggard brioche rib, but I do love a moss stitch scarf (pictured left).

I'm surrounded by pregnant women and have way too much time on my hands, so time to get some needles and yarn in them!

There isn't much selection at the stores I've been to, although I haven't checked the Wal-Mart. I checked the yellow pages and there's a fabric store downtown that claims to sell yarn, as well, but who knows what makes it over the Mexican border. We shall see!

Regarding those pregnant women, I want to knit up some little blankets or car-seat throws. In the summer, it's regularly in the upper 90's to low 100's, but in the winter it can get down to the 30s. Since it's summer now and the little ones are coming soon, I want to knit up a summer-weight baby throw. Can anyone suggest a suitable fiber for desert heat that won't induce heat exhaustion?

I was thinking a mercerized cotton, but there must be something a little more creative. I envision them opening the box and thinking I made them an oversized dishrag, but I suppose that could be averted by using something with a little sheen to it and/or a fancy stitch.

Suggestions please!

It's been weeks since I've knitted anything meaningful - just some hats. So much is going on right now! I've been sick, work is plentiful, court stuff, visiting friends... The last thirty days have seemed low-energy and high-output, but all the work I've been doing is leading up to a trip to Mexico! Finally! I wonder how cheap yarn is in Mexico... I wonder what kind of tarrifs one pays if they resell Mexican goods to US customers...

Although I haven't been knitting much, I've been thinking about it a lot and helping others with their craft. Two gals who work for one of my clients knit and they want me to teach them how dpn's work.

In the past three days, I've knitted two scarves and one mittenette. I'll probably have the other mittenette finished by tomorrow night. I must say the winter weather hasn't been as unpleasant because of of this new form of crack I've found.

On Friday, hmalbert and I crossed paths directly in front of Imagiknit's door. It was such a surreal moment, like a lucid dream. I wasn't ready for the dream to end so I joined him and a friend for an afternoon of pedagogy and leftovers.

Saturday, I met a cool guy at Cafe Flore while knitting. He also knits, although he was making cards that day, and speaks Náhuatl. He had great energy! Lots of love...
