A Note From The UP

Hello everyone.

I am in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan right now. I found a nice knitting shop here in Houghton, MI. I will be traveling a lot in the near future, so I hope to keep you up to date on all of the knitting shops I visit. I would love to tell you more about knitting projects, but I have hit a stand-still on the current project. I will do more when I have more than a few seconds to sit down.

A glimpse into my life can be found at: www.seniornationals.org This is what I do for a living.

Christmas is over...

... thank god.
Ya know, having a deadline for knitted gifts really can frazzle a fella. Yall should warn people. :-) I think there should be a list... "100 things you should know before knitting Christmas gifts"

Well, since it's done I thought I'd post a shameless picture of the blanket I made from the counterpane squares a while back. I used some Caron Simply Soft from Wally World. Eh... it worked. Sorry you can't see lots of detail in the pics. It was the first lace-type thing I'd done. I forgot to take the pictures before I wrapped em up. Oops. The second picture has the niece and my brother holding it.

I completely forgot to take pictures of the other gifts I knitted up. Two stockings (on for the bro holding the blanket and the other for his cute dog), three scarves, the blanket and the Peacock Feathers shawl from Fiddlesticks Knitting (link: http://www.fiddlesticksknitting.com/PeacockLarge.html ) I don't have pictures of the shawl yet. I'll take em after it gets blocked. Tho I'm not sure how I'm gonna block the damn thing. It's HUGE and I don't have the bed space nor the open floor space where the dog won't run around. I think I'll call the LYS's and see if they'll block it for me.

1st Entrelac

here's the 1st Entrelac i did. It was a learning piece. I issued a lot of explatives! I did find that the intersections layed a bit better if I didn't just pick up half of the stitch. Also, Foliage (forget who it's by... it's in my yarn album at home) was not fun for this project... looks cool, not much fun knitting though. Next time I'll use a more uniform gauged yarn.

I Did It!!!

I did something today that I have resisted doing ever since I started knitting. Now some of you may think that I am being crazy, but I have resisted trying to fix a mistake or catch a dropped stich. I would usally frog the project and start over. Well today I was working on a sock on size 0 dpns self-stripping yarn. I noticed that I had droped a stich a couple of rows back. Now I really had ot resist frogging, worked my way back to the place where I dropped the stich and caught up the stich and started working again. Yeah for me!!! I had ot tell someone. Thanks for listening.

Ugh... yarn demons

I'm going through my shelves, organizing the yarn I have, trying to tidy an take inventory, so I don't buy something like what I already have, and I have a steadily growing mound of what I call "Demons": Yarn that I don't like, won't use, and have no idea how it came to be in my possession. (Sale I couldn't pass up? e-bay lot buys? gifts?) What are you all doing with the monsters in your collection? Should we try an online yarn exchange?

Komodo - the dragon bag

I've mentioned my dragon shaped knitting bag in a couple posts - so have attached a photo of him. He has a large zippered pocket in his back (currently holding two skeins of knitpicks superwash "bare" yarn in fingering weight) and a zippered pocket in each haunch. I wish they had included another in his tail, but he can swallow an incredible amount of stuff as it is.

Also atttached is my first project of 2007 - an Irish Hiking Scarf in Jo Sharp Silk Road dk Tweed - colour 'Emerald'. It was suppossed to be nephew-by-marriage Christmas present two years ago - so about time I started it.

bird knitter

does anyone know of an artist that might be named "annette mensaje" - maybe from France that at some point in the late '80s or early '90s collected dead birds from the city (either NY or Paris) and knitted them all sweaters for use in an art installation? I just was talking with a client and she was telling me about it, then she left, and I'm totally intrigued about this - does anyone have a clue what this is and if so, can you provide any links or info on the artist?

Thanks! (I know it's strange; forgive me?)

Widdershins Sock in Generic Form

Happy New Year, all! As I've been knitting up some socks lately using the widdershins pattern in last summer's issue of knitty and sorted out how to adapt it to different foot sizes from the single size (or at least single circumference) in the pattern, some folks asked me to write out how I do my calculations to save them from math anxiety.

I've just posted my generic directions on my blog and figured I'd let y'all know in case of any of you might like that info, too. I do assume some basic understanding of sock construction so it's not really written as a tutorial, but if you're interested in the pattern but are freaked out at trying to recalculate all the stitch counts, I'm hoping it will be helpful.

Happy New Year Everyone!!

Happy New Year and hope that everyone had a great Holiday! Mine was very quiet and relaxing. Now that the new year is here looking forward to a great year and prosperious one, I hope and pray! The salon that I purchased in Sept 06 is doing great and I am trying to get back to some knitting now that everything has settled down and the Holidays are over. Didn't get anything knitted for Christmas, maybe next year. Did get a couple of skein of yarn and a gift card to lys, looking forward to spending that. Anyway, hope you all are healthy and looking forward to the new year!
