Help with Sweater Pattern

I am going to knit my first adult-sized sweater and not one that is in the round and have a couple of questions on the pattern. It's the Jesse's Flame pattern from Stitch 'n Bitch Nation. I'm actually not going to do the flame pattern.

The first question is what do I do when the pattern says, "Work 1 row even."?

The second question is when it comes to the neckline directions. It says, "Joining a new ball of MC to left front, work both sides of neck at once and cont to dec on st at each should edge EOR and, at the same time, BO 1 st from each neck edge EOR until there is 1 st on each side." I don't understand the portion of the instructions in bold. I don't get how to "work both sides of neck at once" especially since there are going to be 2 working yarns. The pattern doesn't say to break yarn from the original working yarn.

Looking for patterns for men by men!

Hello knitter men!

I know that your site is used to promote knitting among men and I think it's great! In fact, I would love to help out!

I work for South West Trading Company (www.soysilk.com) aquiring new patterns to support our yarns. As part of our Summer '06 line, we have introduced a yarn called Twize. It is an 8-ply, 100% bamboo yarn and has a very special color just for you men out there. It is called Twen (as in men!)

The purpose of my post here is to see if there is anyone interested in designing a pattern out of this yarn. I would love to promote it as a pattern for men, by men! It need not be anything complex. I'm thinking of simple vest or something along those lines.  Of course you would be given the credit for the pattern and I would be more than delighted to compensate you with any yarn of your choice for your time and talent.

Do we want women joining this site?

The title 'Men Who Knit' is pretty clear to me.
Not that I have anything against women perse. Then I think about the other sites out there that are basically female based. Go to any clothing store and compare the amount of floor space devoted to guys and dolls. 
 
 What do you think guys?

I am so frustrated with myself. I totally misread a pattern and have had to rip out 3 days work. It was when I was towards the end of the second ball of Debbie Bliss that I realised my mistake. Looking back at the pattern it was increase 6 stitches the next 6 rows. For whatever reason I increased only 1 stitch each of 6 rows

Oh well, it could have been worse I guess.

Knit Out response

Oh dear Jack, what a shame that you did not enjoy the Knit Out experience. Union Square has improved over the last 10 years. Perhaps it looks parched after this long dry summer that we have had in NYC. Areas were closed off to the public for several seasons to allow the grass to grow back and the south end has been totally repaved. The north end will be getting revamped soon including the pavilion.
Although knitting is extemely popular today it has not caught the inspiration of top designers like Nicole Farhi and Edina Ronay like it did in the late 70's and 80's. Before I'm shot down down in flames those designers were really popular in London when I lived there. Nicole has a store here in NY but the knitting line is a small, very small part of it.
As I see it and it is only my opinion despite the proliferation of yarn stores with beautiful but expensive yarns. Knitting is a hobby. It is a backlash to the computer age. Despite people I know and respect enjoying knitting for themselves and loved ones the objects being created are by and large for personal enjoyment. Until the big names come along and really inspire the fashion scene with knitted clothing it is going to remain very much a home grown past time. Not that there is anything wrong with that. A sweater is a sweater is a sweater. But, until a brand like Comme de Garcon, Issey Miyake, Vivienne Westwood or Alexander McQueen et al really shakes up the knitting scene it is going to stay very humdrum. The preppy knit wear by Ralph Lauren, Donna Karen etc. is still very popular. The whole design scene needs to be shaken up. We as knitters need to demand more creative, exciting designs by the like of Debbie Bliss, Nicke Epstien to name just two. 
Oh boy I hope that I won't be ostracized for my venting. I love knitting very much and enjoy creating items out of 2 sticks and some yarn. For now I enjoy the designs of Debbie Bliss et al. I am still challenged interpeting their patterns sometimes and have to rip out 3 or 5 times before I get it right. As for Entrelac I will put that aside for a while longer.
We are all free to design and create so let's see your stuff guys!

October 2nd

NY Knit Out

Hi guys

I was at the Knit Out from 1 PM to 5:15. Phew. The was never ending of folk wanting to learn how to knit and across the way was an equally long line waiting to learn how to crochet.
Oh and as I was leaving one of the organizers told me that I was the first male teacher!!!!!!!! 
 Then I went to Boys Night at The Point as usual on a Sunday evening. A fun long day knitting for me.
Tomorrow I start my first Knitting afterschool class!
