am i ass-u-m[e]ing too much?

is there a style of knitting, whether on regular needles, or DPNs, or circs, that lets you avoid purling, by turning the needles somehow? maybe by using dpn's and sliding the stitches to the opposite end of your needle and turning your work, etc?

i'm thinking something where if the pattern says:
knit 5, purl 10, knit 5, slip 2 purlwise

you could instead just:

hybrid fingertipless gloves/mittens...?

hi all... looking for a pattern for a hybrid style of gloves... i saw 2 patterns on ravelry that are similar to my brain's vision (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/libr...e-finger-mitts and http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/libr...-winter-gloves) but still not quite... i'd like sort of a combo of those 2 - fingertipless thumb and full-size fingertipless index.

10-Stitch Blanket but 0-Stitch Brains...

Has anybody attempted/finished a 10-stitch blanket such as http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/ten-stitch-blanket ? I've tried and frogged 4 times now. I can't get past the corner stuff. It's either too many instructions, or too many new concepts for a newbie, or I'm missing something, or whatever. I've tried looking for a video of it being made, to no avail.

Knitting and beer

OK, so I usually look askance at these comments about "knitting in public." I knit anywhere I like, public or private, and I have never had a negative experience with it.

sock design - how far do you like to take the ankle ribbing?

Hi Everyone.

Since I still consider myself a beginner, I really welcome advice and ideas. I'm making my first sock. If it turns out ok, I'll knit the second and call them a pair. :)

fixing mistakes in lace?

Somewhere, in the last week, I read an article, with great pictures, of how someone dropped stitches and re-knitted row by row using coloured pins for each row.
Does that sound familiar to anyone?
Can't find the article.

Gauge Sanity Check

My niece has asked me to do her a sweater, and I have tons of Bolivian alpaca in my stash. The yarn was supposed to be for a different project, but my friend in La Paz got the wrong weight. Now I am left with 900g of 2-3 fingering/sport weight yarn. Pattern calls for a US 8 needle and a gauge of 17 sts & 22 rows = 4" x 4". My gauge swatch worked up to 3" x 3" with 2 yarns stranded.
