Design? or dumb luck?

I fudge around with patterns quite a bit - for a number of reasons.

Recently I wanted a simple lacey pattern for a mohair variagated yarn (need to get picture - promise soon) and came up with Fibonacci Eyelet Triangle.

If I do say so myself - it is working up beautifully. And usually when I do something like this it does.

Then I read various peoples blogs about how they swatch and calculate and rip and re-swatch and select a different yarn, etc, etc, etc. I think the most false starts I've ever made on a project was three, and two of them were less then 15 stitches.

So why is this? I put it sown to sheer dumb luck. Though I will admit normally it may be that subconsciously I put a lot more "thinking" time into a project then I am aware of - I know I like to have yarn marinate in stash a while when it hasn't been purchased with a specific project in mind - and it is rare that I don't have a pattern idea that mulls around for a few months in the back of my mind before I actually start it.

Whatever - I'm grateful so many of my projects come out in a manner I'm satisfied with. For example - the circular version of 'Progressive' I did earlier this year - - a whim; but it worked!

FIrst Sweater

Hi guys,

It's been a while since I've posted. The combination of full-time work, part-time school for PhD, and my spinning and knitting doesn't allow me to really post and converse. Trust me, I do read the sight everyday. I enjoy hearing the stories and sharing information.

I finished my first sweater yesterday. It was from a merino blend I hand spun. So I'm ready for some new yarn. You can get tired of working with one color. Suffice it to say, I had to start a scarf project and a sock project that can be finished now that the sweater is done. They provided appropriate distractions.

messenger bag questions

I fly frequently and have not been able to find a carryon that fit TSA guidelines and carried what I needed so I decided to make my own. I have the front bottom, back and flap done in one five foot piece but I am starting the sides which will also act as the strap.
What is going to be my best way to connect it.
1. sew them together
2. is there a way to knit it to the other piece as I go?

has anyone else came across this and how well does the seam hold together once it is felted?

love to hear your advise
